Polysaccharide-based biodegradable materials have a promising future in green food packaging and are one of the best alternatives to non-renewable resources. CD BioGlyco is committed to providing clients with a variety of strategies to develop polysaccharide-based food packaging materials to optimize overall performance or overcome the limitations of traditional packaging materials.

Advantages of Polysaccharide-based Biodegradable Material for Food Packaging

Polymer materials have been widely used in food packaging for a long time, but they are difficult to degrade naturally after use, causing environmental pollution. Biodegradable packaging materials have become the inevitable trend of green food packaging with their advantages of being renewable and easily degradable. Compared with traditional plastic packaging materials, the use of polysaccharide-based materials provides a green, sustainable, and environmentally friendly technological solution that can reduce the dependence on fossil resources. Due to their superior gel-forming and film-forming properties, various polysaccharides have been widely used to develop films and gels for food packaging.

Considerable research progress has been made in the field of Carbohydrate-based Degradable Materials for food packaging, including the development of polysaccharide-based edible films, smart packaging films, and aerogels. They maintain the quality and extend the shelf life of food products during storage and transportation. Recently, smart polysaccharide-based biodegradable films are gaining interest in smart packaging that can monitor and deliver the condition of packaged foods. Various polysaccharide-based materials have been developed as bioindicators for smart packaging to promote green and eco-sustainable technologies.

Development Services for Polysaccharide-based Biodegradable Food Packaging Materials at CD BioGlyco

  • Preparation of polysaccharide-based biodegradable films
Polysaccharides such as cellulose derivatives, starches, and chitosan have been reported as raw materials for the preparation of edible films and coatings as food packaging materials. In the preparation of polysaccharide-based degradable films, we use solvents to dissolve or disperse raw materials and add additives such as crosslinkers, plasticizers, or bioactive ingredients to improve the performance of the film. We coat the film-forming solution onto food products by dipping, spraying, brushing, and panning.
Our researchers also provide clients with development services for polysaccharide-based bionanocomposites. We offer various techniques such as ionic gelation, hydrolysis, reverse micellization, cross-linking, and emulsification to help our clients develop food packaging films based on chitosan, chitin, starch, and alginate nanoparticles.
We provide our clients with different types of biodegradable films based on food properties.
    • Polysaccharide-based biodegradable films for wet and fatty foods.
    • Polysaccharide-based biodegradable films for post-harvest foods.
  • Development of polysaccharide-based smart packaging
We help our clients develop polysaccharide-based smart packaging systems, which contain an external or internal indicator with types of indicators including gas indicators, freshness indicators, and time-temperature sensitive indicators. We typically incorporate bioactive components into polysaccharide matrices and obtain the final material by the casting method or lyophilization.
  • Development of polysaccharide-based aerogels
Aerogels are proven to be used as part of reactive food packaging. We help our clients synthesize polysaccharide-based aerogels with low thermal conductivity characteristics for use as mechanical supporters in bio-food packaging for heat-sensitive foods through drying technology.

CD BioGlyco has focused on Applications of Polysaccharide-based Biodegradable Materials including food packaging for many years. Our researchers provide clients with the Modification of Biodegradable polysaccharides to optimize the overall performance of the material, such as mechanical and film-forming properties, and to successfully develop a variety of polysaccharide-based biodegradable packaging materials.
