Analyzing Erythromycin with Precision and Expertise

Erythromycin, an organic compound with the chemical formula C37H67NO13, is a macrolide antibiotic. Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic with excellent anti-infective properties and is often used in medical applications in the form of extended-release capsules, extended-release tablets, gels, solutions, injections, granules, or ointments.

  • Specific rotation
    The erythromycin is dissolved and diluted in anhydrous ethanol and its specific rotation is determined using a spinometer. The specific spin should be between -71° and -78°.
  • Identification
    The infrared spectrum of the sample is tested and the infrared spectrum obtained is compared with the infrared spectrum of the erythromycin standard. If the plots agree, the sample is erythromycin.
  • Alkalinity
    We will dissolve the erythromycin in water and then test its pH, which should be 8.0 to 10.5.
  • Thiocyanate content
    Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry: The amount of thiocyanate is obtained by measuring the absorbance of erythromycin solution after dissolving erythromycin in methanol. It is worth noting that the content of thiocyanate in erythromycin should not exceed 0.3%.
  • Moisture
    Moisture of erythromycin is determined using a moisture meter coupled with a Kahlsch drying oven. Erythromycin should not contain more than 6.0% moisture.
  • Cauterization of residue
    Erythromycin is accurately weighed and placed in a crucible followed by slow incandescence until the erythromycin is completely charred. After cooling, it is weighed accurately.
  • Erythromycin content
    The erythromycin is dissolved using methanol, followed by its dilution using phosphate buffer. Finally, it is detected using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The content of erythromycin can be calculated using the external standard method.

In addition, erythromycin is used in the pharmaceutical field through erythromycin delayed-release capsules, erythromycin topical gel, erythromycin intramammary infusion, erythromycin injection, erythromycin ointment, erythromycin pledgets, erythromycin ophthalmic ointment, erythromycin topical solution, erythromycin tablets, erythromycin delayed-release tablets, erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide topical gel. Results: In this research, the authors developed a method for the removal of erythromycin using anaerobic fermentation techniques. In the research, authors explored the removal of erythromycin and its effect mechanism on anaerobic fermentation. Results showed that erythromycin removal was higher than 90% for all tested concentrations after fermentation. In addition, the authors found that the increase in erythromycin content facilitated the inhibition of biogas production. This also proved that erythromycin was able to inhibit the hydrolysis process in the early stage of anaerobic fermentation. The erythromycin was also able to inhibit the lignocellulose degradation in the later stages of fermentation. This study supports the reuse of antibiotic-contaminated biowaste and provides a reference for further research.
