Carbohydrate Antigen 125

Carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA 125) is highly glycosylated mucin found on the surface of ovarian cancer cells, encoded by the MUC16 gene, and was first identified as an ovarian cancer antigen in 1981. The antigen is rarely present in normal serum or in adult or fetal ovaries. As a tumor marker, CA 125 can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.
