Oligosaccharides-based Glycomedicine Development

CD BioGlyco has professional glycomedicine development teams to help customers comprehensively promote the development of oligosaccharides-based glycomedicine. We have the confidence to be your essential research assistant in the field of glycobiology.

Properties of Oligosaccharides

Oligosaccharides are carbohydrate chains containing 3-10 sugar units. However, some authors also include carbohydrates with up to 20 residues. Oligosaccharides can be made of any sugar monomers, but most research has been carried out on fructooligosaccharides (e.g., oligofructose) and galactooligosaccharides (e.g., raffinose, human milk oligosaccharides). Few oligosaccharides are hydrolyzed and absorbed in the small intestine (e.g., maltotriose), but nearly all enter the colon intact (nondigestible oligosaccharides). A major obstacle in glycobiology and glycomedicine is the lack of pure and structurally well-defined carbohydrates and glycoconjugates. These compounds are often found in low concentrations and microheterogeneous forms, greatly complicating their isolation and characterization. Therefore, the development of effective synthesis and extraction methods of oligosaccharides is a prerequisite based on the functional study of oligosaccharides.

Oligosaccharides linked to proteins as well as peptides are concerned with several biological events. Therefore, much attention is being paid to research on the investigation of the function of these oligosaccharides. In terms of posttranslational modification, the attachment of oligosaccharides to the proteins is thought to have a large effect on protein function. Oligosaccharides of glycoprotein are roughly divided into two groups, O-linked and N-linked types. In order to develop the biological function of these oligosaccharides, research on oligosaccharides-based glycomedicine development is gradually emerging.
