Mannan-binding Lectin

Mannose-binding protein (MBP) or lectin (MBL) is a lectin that acts as an adsorbent in innate immunity and through the lectin-complement pathway. MBL consists of subunits with an oligomeric structure (400-700 kDa) containing three probably identical peptide chains of approximately 30 kDa.

Results: In this study, a mannan-specific lectin ((MBL-SN)) was isolated from the sea urchin plasma using a combination of gel filtration chromatography, affinity chromatography, and ion exchange chromatography. The physicochemical characterization showed that the molecular weight of the lectin was about 34 kDa, and it belonged to the C-type mannose-specific lectin. It had a common folding pattern compared to the existing three-dimensional structure of C-type mannose-specific lectins.
