Free Fatty Acid Analysis

Free Fatty Acid Analysis

Free fatty acids (FFAs) are produced by the breakdown of triglycerides. CD BioGlyco has complete Fatty Acid Analysis solutions to provide customers with high-quality FFAs analysis services. The samples we analyzed include human excrement, blood, meat products, vegetable oils, cells, etc.

Overview of FFAs

Fatty acids (FAs) are a class of carboxylic acid compounds, usually in the form of esterification as a component of lipids such as neutral lipids, phospholipids, and glycolipids. FFAs are produced by the breakdown of triglycerides. FFAs are closely related to abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism and other cardiovascular diseases, such as obesity, hypertension, hyperinsulinemia, and type 2 diabetes.

For one thing, exogenous fat is transported through plasma and enters adipocytes in the form of FFAs, and then synthesizes fat storage. Meanwhile, endogenous fat in the body is mainly synthesized in the liver and enters fat cell storage through plasma transport. For another thing, the stored fat is constantly degraded and enters various tissues in the form of FFAs to be oxidized and utilized, so that the fat metabolism is in dynamic balance.

Gas chromatography (GC) is currently the most widely used method for analyzing FAs. Since FAs contain polar groups such as carboxyl groups and are not volatile, they need to be methylated into volatile non-polar fatty acid methyl esters. Methyl esterification is a classic method for FAs derivatization, and the esterification reaction of FFAs mostly uses concentrated sulfuric acid-methanol methyl esterification.

Our Services

CD BioGlyco is a recognized leader in the field of FAs analysis. Based on our advanced equipment, we use different derivatization techniques combined with GC to analyze FFAs in a variety of substances, such as human excrement, blood, meat products, vegetable oils, cells, etc.

Case: Analysis of FFAs in sputum of pulmonary tuberculosis patients by GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)

  1. Extraction and enrichment of FFAs in the saliva of pulmonary tuberculosis patients by solid-phase microextraction.
  2. Use 6% concentrated sulfuric acid-methanol to carry out methyl esterification derivatization reaction of FFAs extract.
  3. Analysis of FFAs by GC-MS.
