Cyclodextrin-based Biodegradable Material Development

Cyclodextrin-based Biodegradable Material Development

Our Cyclodextrin (CD)-based Material Development Service Start with the Details

CD BioGlyco provides customized development services for Biodegradable Materials Based on Monosaccharides, Disaccharides, Oligosaccharides, and Polysaccharides. CD is an oligosaccharide composed of glucose linked by α-(1,4) glycosidic bonds. It and its derivatives are very effective, efficient, and inexpensive biomaterials. We provide a one-stop service for the development of CD-based biodegradable material from design and preparation to analysis.

  • Development Process

There are three naturally common types of CD. These include α-CD, β-CD, and γ-CD. In addition to these, there are various chemically modified forms. Currently, it is widely used in many fields such as pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, cosmetics, textiles, and food. We mainly develop biodegradable materials for drug delivery, packaging, etc., including hydrogels, adsorbents, and films. We are well-versed in various methods related to biodegradable material preparation. After determining the material properties and requirements, we screen appropriate CDs and methods for biodegradable material preparation. We also mix CD with other polymers for the preparation of biodegradable material to ensure the good properties of biodegradable material. Finally, we test the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the material to analyze the usability and effectiveness of the material.

  • Development Methods
    • Direct blending: This is a simpler method in which a variety of polymers in dry, crystalline, and powder form are blended and mixed with some plasticizers to further form a composite film.
    • Solution casting: This technique dissolves the polymer in any solvent and then the solution is poured into a glass plate. The film is then dried at high temperatures to evaporate any excess liquid and then peeled off for use.
    • Layer-by-layer assembly: It is a common method in which layers of polymer are coated in a specific way through hydrogen bonding.
    • Electrospinning: This technique puts a polymer solution into a syringe and high pressure is applied to produce a customized cone for creating fine fibers. These fine fibers are collected on a straight plate or drum covered with aluminum foil.
    • Micro- and nanoencapsulations: Encapsulating polymers in other compounds used as capsules ensures the slow release of bioactive compounds when needed.
    • Coatings: Functional polymers are applied to food products. They are mainly used to coat functional bioactive compounds on cardboard and paper used to package food for transportation. They are also used to upgrade simple paper or cardboard packaging materials.
    • Other strategies: In addition to this, we also prepare CD films by adsorption, for example.

Results: In this study, an antimicrobial food packaging film was prepared by blending carrageenan, cyclodextrin, and curcumin. The film was also evaluated for biodegradability and photodynamic sterilization. The results showed that the film has a good antimicrobial effect, degradability, and mechanical properties, and has great potential in extending the shelf life of food.
