Introduction of Lectin
Lectins are a variety of proteins that specifically bind to carbohydrate residues of glycoproteins and glycolipids. More than 300 lectins have been found in various species from viruses, bacteria to plants and animals. These proteins play a role in identifying molecules in cell-molecule and cell-cell interactions. This is related to many basic biological processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, white blood cell homing and transportation, and microbial infection. The wide range of applications of lectins includes the application in blood typing, as histochemical and cytochemical reagents, to detect glycoconjugates on tissue sections, cells and subcellular organelles, and to study the glycosylation of proteins in intracellular pathways. Immobilized lectins are usually used to separate and purify glycoproteins, glycopeptides and oligosaccharides. This is a new technology that uses a set of lectins immobilized on a well-defined substrate for high-throughput analysis of glycans and glycoproteins.
