Blood Group and Lewis Antigen

Blood groups are defined by oligosaccharide structures that are specific to antigens. The ABO blood group system is associated with A, B, and H antigens, whose specificity lies in the differences in the terminal carbohydrate residues. The H antigen is synthesized by adding fucosyl residues to a precursor oligosaccharide. The addition of N-acetylgalactosamine residues to the H antigen produces the A antigen, while the addition of galactose residues produces the B antigen. Small changes in the oligosaccharide structure not only affect the classification of blood groups but also have an impact on immune responses, biorecognition, and pathogen-host interactions. CD BioGlyco is a specialist glycobiology company that has invested heavily in the development of blood group and Lewis antigen products to promote and accelerate scientific research in related fields.

ABO tissue blood group antigens are expressed on red blood cells and widely distributed in various tissues. Blood group antigens are further divided into six subtypes based on linkage arrangement.

Table 1 The six subtype structures of blood group antigens. (CD BioGlyco)

Subtypes Structures
Blood group antigen type I ABO-β(1,3)GlcNAc
Blood group antigen type II ABO-β(1,4)GlcNAc
Blood group antigen type III ABO-β(1,4)GalNAc
Blood group antigen type IV ABO-β(1,3)GalNAc
Blood group antigen type V ABO-β(1,3)Gal
Blood group antigen type VI ABO-β(1,4)Glc

We provide clients with ABH blood group antigen products of different subtypes, such as blood group A tetrasaccharide type V, blood group B type I linear trisaccharide, and blood group H tetraose type II. We also couple Sepharose, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and human serum albumin (HSA) with blood group antigens to develop conjugates. Lewisa and Lewisb are the two main antigens in the Lewis tissue blood group system. We provide clients with high-quality Lewis A, Lewis B, Lewis X, and Lewis Y products to support your innovative research.

Blood Group A

Blood group A products are developed specifically to advance the science of blood type A research and are core tools for studying blood type A-specific antigen expression and its role in immune response. By utilizing these highly pure and specific sugar molecules, researchers have deeply analyzed the biochemical properties and molecular mechanisms of blood type A and explored its potential for application in transfusion medicine, immunology, and blood type-related genetic diseases. Results: The authors summarize the biosynthesis of sLex and sLea in cell lines and native tissues of gastrointestinal origin, understanding the relationship between their expression and various cancer phenotypes. The authors also discuss the use of such molecules in gastrointestinal cancer diagnostics, especially the possible use in the early detection of pancreatic cancer. Finally, the authors review data on the mechanism of the link between selectin ligand expression in gastrointestinal cells and cancer malignancy.
