Description

This high-purity synthetic model formulation features dielaidoylphosphatidylcholine and cholesterol liposomes (18:1 (Δ9-trans) PC:Chol (70:30) liposomes) prepared at a precise molecular ratio. The vesicular matrix self-assembles from exactly 70 mol% of the symmetric trans-monounsaturated phospholipid dielaidoylphosphatidylcholine (18:1 (Δ9-trans) PC) and 30 mol% of high-purity cholesterol (Chol). The straight, extended conformation of the acyl chains caused by the trans double bond configuration at the delta-9 position (Δ9-trans) results in exceptionally tight packing and a higher phase transition temperature compared to the corresponding cis-isomer matrix.
