What Is the Role of GSLs in Glycobiology?

GSLs are glycolipids widely distributed on the surface of animal cell membranes and have important biological roles in regulating cell recognition, adhesion, proliferation, and apoptosis. In general, GSLs can be divided into several groups: neutral GSLs and negatively charged GSLs. The information carried by the structure of GSLs is important for biological processes, and it also acts as signaling molecules and participates in many intracellular signaling processes, as well as regulating cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, and other physiological processes. In addition, it is also involved in the transport of membrane proteins, regulation of ion channels, and other functions. GSLs are important biomolecules in animals and they have significant biological functions in many aspects, such as the regulation of cell membrane structure and many other biological processes. GSLs are also widely present in humans, especially abundant in brain tissue. Therefore, abnormalities in the metabolism of GSLs may affect the function of the nervous system. For example, some neurodegenerative diseases are associated with abnormal metabolism of GSLs.
