Ultra-small gold structures consisting of fewer than a few dozen gold atoms (<2 nm core) stabilized within a folded matrix of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Due to quantum confinement effects, these nanoclusters exhibit strong molecule-like fluorescence emissions, breaking away from bulk metal plasmonic trends.
