Methacrylate functionalized chitosan is thermo/photo cross-linkable and can be used as a precursor for hydrogel synthesis in a variety of biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, 3D bioprinting, and drug and gene delivery. Because chitosan-based materials have mucoadhesive characteristics, they are commonly be used in transmucosal medicines delivery.
