This advanced composite material features copper sulfide and liposome nanocomposites (Cu2-x-S/liposome nanocomposites) designed with an inorganic-organic hybrid core-shell architecture. The internal structure consists of non-stoichiometric copper sulfide (Cu2-x-S) semiconductor nanocrystals that exhibit strong localized surface plasmon resonance in the near-infrared spectrum, which are completely enveloped by or integrated with a self-assembled outer matrix of a high-purity phospholipid bilayer. This configuration combines the photostable, near-infrared absorbing properties of the semiconductor core with the surface-functionalization capabilities of a lipid bilayer shell. The resulting nanocomposites exhibit high colloidal stability and a highly narrow sub-micron size distribution profile.
