Description

This high-purity synthetic model formulation features dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine liposomes modified with a precise molecular fraction of sterols (DPPC+10% cholesterol liposomes). The vesicular matrix self-assembles from exactly 90 mol% of the symmetric saturated phospholipid 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) and 10 mol% of high-purity cholesterol. The integration of a minor 10% sterol fraction into the rigid saturated C16 palmitoyl matrix begins to break up the dense gel-phase packing (Tm 41ºC), introducing localized liquid-ordered domains and altering the main phase transition enthalpy compared to pure saturated controls.
