These polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/chondroitin sulfate electrospun fibrous scaffolds are made from a blend of a synthetic hydrophilic polymer and a natural glycosaminoglycan found in connective tissues. The chondroitin sulfate provides a high density of sulfate and carboxyl groups, mimicking the chemical environment of natural cartilage and improving the bio-affinity of the PVA mat. The resulting scaffold features a highly porous, hydrophilic fiber network used to study the interaction between cells and biomimetic materials in non-human in vitro research.
