Poly(1-vinylimidazole-co-methacrylic acid) (P(VI-co-MAA)) hydrogels are responsive copolymeric networks with metal-binding capabilities. The composition contains imidazole rings that act as ligands for various transition metal ions. The structure responds to ph changes, causing the gel to swell or shrink depending on the protonation state of the acid and imidazole groups.
