This enantioselective catalyst consists of zero-dimensional rhodium (Rh) nanoclusters surface-coordinated with chiral quinine alkaloid modifier ligands. The quinine molecules form a stereochemical pocket on the rhodium surface that guides incoming ethyl pyruvate reactants into a preferred spatial orientation during hydrogenation, yielding high enantiomeric excess.
