Uridine 5'-diphosphate (UDP) is an organic compound of pyrimidine ribonucleoside diphosphate, which consists of a pyrophosphate group, pentose ribose sugar, and nucleobase uracil. UDP can be used as a signaling molecule between cells to participate in the signal transduction process. In the process of the cellular respiratory chain and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation, UDP can be interconverted with glucose and provide energy by participating in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. UDP is a form of nucleotide diphosphate, which can be used as one of the substrates for RNA and DNA synthesis, supplying bases in nucleic acid structures by participating in the nucleotide synthesis pathway. In addition, UDP can also be used as a substrate and an activator to participate in the synthesis, modification, and degradation of carbohydrates.
