18-Crown-6/Fe3O4 composite magnetic nanoparticles consist of superparamagnetic Fe3O4 particles modified with 18-crown-6 macrocycles. The structure leverages the specific cavity size of the crown ether, which is perfectly sized to "host" specific metal cations through ion-dipole interactions. This composite combines the rapid magnetic response of the iron oxide core with high selectivity for alkali metal ions.
