Biological Significance of GSL

GSL is formed by a ceramide backbone linked to one or more glycosyl groups. It contains two main components, namely the hydrophobic lipid chain as well as the hydrophilic glycoconjugate chain. Such a structure is required to extend the polar end of the glycoconjugate component outside the cytoplasmic membrane after embedding it in the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane. The presence of more than 400 GSLs has been identified based on the structural identification of glycan chains, and the structure of its ceramide is variable. The characteristics of GSL metabolism and composition change during the proliferation and differentiation of various cell types, suggesting a correlation between the GSL expression pattern and the function of these cells.
