These carboxyl functionalized upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs-COOH) feature a surface modified with carboxylic acid groups to facilitate high water dispersibility and chemical reactivity. The carboxyl moieties serve as anchors for the covalent attachment of various organic molecules through standard carbodiimide chemistry.
