These chitosan modified upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) are surface-coated with the natural polysaccharide chitosan to provide a biocompatible and reactive surface. The chitosan layer offers a high density of amine and hydroxyl groups for chemical functionalization. These particles exhibit a positive surface charge in acidic to neutral pH, which can be utilized for electrostatic interactions.
