These core-shell rare-earth upconversion nanomaterials (UCNMs) feature an inorganic dual-layer architecture where a doped core is encapsulated by an undoped shell of similar lattice parameters. The composition is engineered to eliminate surface-related quenching by increasing the distance between activators and surface defects or ligands. This physical structure is a primary method for significantly enhancing the upconversion brightness of lanthanide-doped materials.
