These epoxide modified water-soluble upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) possess a surface layer rich in reactive epoxide groups. The epoxide moiety allows for ring-opening reactions with various nucleophiles such as amines or thiols under laboratory conditions. The inorganic fluoride core provides bright and stable upconversion signals that are unaffected by the surface chemical reactions.
