These glycyrrhetinic acid modified water-soluble upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs-GA) are surface-functionalized with a pentacyclic triterpenoid derivative. The glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) molecules are covalently or electrostatically linked to the nanoparticle surface, providing a unique hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance that maintains water solubility while introducing specific molecular recognition sites.
