These oil-soluble upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) are inorganic rare-earth emitters capped with long-chain hydrophobic ligands like oleic acid. This surface chemistry ensures that the particles can be easily dispersed in non-polar solvents for industrial or laboratory applications. The high crystallinity of the fluoride core ensures that the luminescence is not affected by the hydrophobic capping layer.
