These oleic acid conjugated NaY(Gd/Lu/Nd):Yb,Er@NaYF5:Yb,Nd upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) feature a hydrophobic capping layer that is stably linked to a core-shell fluoride structure. The NaYF5 host lattice in the shell provides a unique crystalline environment for the Nd and Yb sensitizers. These particles are designed for high-performance upconversion in organic phases with reduced thermal effects.
