These polyethylenimine (PEI) modified sodium yttrium fluoride:ytterbium/erbium (NaYF4:Yb/Er (80/18/2)) upconverting nanoparticles are inorganic crystals surface-treated with a branched cationic polymer. The 80/18/2 ratio signifies a host composition optimized for bright green and red emissions. The PEI layer provides high water solubility and a versatile chemical handle through its abundant primary and secondary amine groups.
