These poly(4-vinylpyridine) modified water-soluble upconverting nanoparticles (P4VP@UCNPs) feature a pH-responsive polymer coating surrounding the rare-earth doped core. The pyridine rings in the poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) chain can be protonated under acidic conditions, allowing for tunable surface charge and solubility transitions in various laboratory media. This modification provides a robust platform for investigating the behavior of optical materials within stimuli-responsive polymer matrices.
