These pyropheophorbide-a (Ppa) conjugated sodium yttrium fluoride ytterbium thulium at sodium yttrium fluoride ytterbium neodymium (NaYF4,Yb,Tm@NaYF4,Yb,Nd) core-shell upconversion nanoparticles (core-shell UCNPs) feature a multi-layer design for 808 nm excitation. The composition focuses on the energy transfer from the thulium-doped core to the ppa molecules on the shell. The physical structure is optimized to reduce quenching effects and maximize the signal-to-noise ratio in optical experiments.
