The primary physiological function of UTP is as a substrate for RNA synthesis during transcription. UTP is involved in the synthesis of Cytidine Triphosphate (CTP) as a substrate. UTP also acts like Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) as an energy source or substrate activator in metabolic reactions. Galactose metabolism is participated by UTP, in which the activated form of UDP-galactose is converted to UDP-glucose. In addition, some studies have shown that UTP has a certain effect on immune metabolism, and can also stimulate myoelectric potential.
Different from other NTP syntheses, UTP is difficult to synthesize by enzyme-catalyzed strategy. Rapid kinase inactivation and slow UTP production are unsolved problems. Chemical synthesis is the strategy for the preparation of UTP. Different synthetic pipelines are based on different raw materials, including activated nucleoside phosphoramidite, uridine, uridine monophosphate, uridine diphosphate, orotic acid, and adenosine triphosphate.
