These water-soluble ytterbium/erbium/gadolinium (Yb3+/Er3+/Gd3+) co-doped NaYF4 upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) are functionalized to remain stable in polar solvents like water and ethanol. The inclusion of gadolinium allows for potential magnetic manipulation or contrast enhancement in research systems. The particles provide a bright upconversion signal under near-infrared excitation while maintaining a small hydrodynamic diameter.
